When you first learn about what an ostomy is
most people instantly are taken aback by it.
They are simply afraid and feel bad about themselves if they are in line
to get one or feel bad for others if they know a friend or family member is
going to be receiving one. Then the
information overload begins and the talk of healthy skin keeps coming up.
Without a doubt, it is one of the most important parts of taking care of your
stoma and the skin around it. Being
healthy can save so much physical and mental anguish. Don’t get overwhelmed and
yes it may seem complicated but it is all very learnable and keeping healthy
skin is possible. Its a new feeling and finding a new normal takes some work
and time. If you are ever feeling
helpless just talk to your healthcare provider and they can walk you through
step by step and be there with you.
Just to start with, pay attention to yourself.
Know what your abdomen looks like and pay careful attention to your skin. Know what color is normal and what is not and
start right now. Its easy, just take a look. Go over to a mirror and start to
take mental photos and maybe even a real photo just to compare. Remember if you have a tan right now or may
have one in the future because that can change a lot. Your very sense of well
being can be attacked when your skin is not healthy. So mentally keeping your
skin clear and healthy is important as well. I personally use Ostomy Supplies for my ostomy needs and it has helped keep my skin clear and safe.
Having unhealthy skin brings about lots of
other mental fears. You may be afraid
that you will leak and it can really keep you from doing your normal life
routines. It is nothing to be ashamed of
but we have mostly gone through the wanting to withdraw from normal life
because of a fear that shouldn't be there. So take a minute, breathe, its ok.
Fear is normal but you shouldn't let it control your life. Having a stoma and living a normal after an
ostomy are possible and you will be able to interact just like you used to.
So if you do see redness or feel sensitivity
beyond the normal, don’t put it off. Go
right to your health care provider and get the right treatment or advice on
changing a product or two and maybe changing brands to Hollister Ostomy
Supplies.
